Production and Release The Matrix was produced by Warner Bros. studios, and released in the U.S. on March 31, 1999. It was written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, also known as the Wachowski Brothers. The principal cast included, Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Hugo Weaving among others. During its opening weekend, it made $27,788,331 and it grossed $171,383,253. It won an Oscar for, best film editing, best sound, best effects (sound effects editing, and best effects (visual effects). Three years prior to the release of this film the Wachowski Brothers also directed and released Bound, which was a movie about an ex con and her lover planning to steal a lot of money and framing someone else for it. This film is relevant to the one discussed, because it focuses on outcasts in society and the changes they go through to come closer to their new beginning.
